Travel Journal: Asheville

November 17, 2017

I am so consumed by wanderlust right now. I don’t know whether it’s the southern sun making me crazy or if there’s something in the water. I can’t figure it out, but I love it. I’ve always thought that travelling is worthwhile, even if it does break the bank. Sometimes you’ve just got to bite the bullet and go for it. RIP my student loan.

So, over fall break, instead of getting absolutely frazzled by the pool crying over a wine hangover, we went to Asheville. By ‘we’ I mean me and my travel companions Josie and Cole #shoutout. To say the least, it was an absolute hoot. A much needed unwind from university work and midterms.

We met up at 8am. Tears of tiredness were shed.

Coffee was needed and coffee was had. Safe to say I am not a morning person. I’m less of an “early bird catches the worm” and more of a “second mouse gets the cheese” kind of girl. It is just one, big struggle when you wake up looking and feeling like that crap taxidermy fox. But 40 alarms and a strong coffee later, I was out of bed and sorting my life out.

The drive from Columbia to Asheville took around 2 ½ hours and it totally flew by, with special thanks to Britney Spears, Adele and Shania Twain. We also made one stop along the way. There was something I needed to get. Something I needed in my life. I may have cried at the checkout and internally screamed whilst handing over my card, but it was time.

I finally bought myself a camera. This dreamy thing to be exact:

NO REGRETS because it’s magical and I love it, even if my bank balance doesn’t.

When we finally arrived in Asheville, we had a bit of a wander. We essentially walked everywhere, and thank God because FOOD. There was so much of it, and so much of it was consumed, no lie. But hey, not a single sh*t given, because it was all absolutely AMAZING and totally worth it.

The shops were equally as cute and quirky. From thrift stores and high-end boutiques to weird and wonderful gift shops, it’s got something for everyone. Very much worth a visit. We even watched Abby the Spoon Lady play her spoons in front of the giant flat iron. And no, none of that sentence was autocorrected. But honestly, just give Abby a google. I promise you, you will not be disappointed.

We finished our day at the Omni Grove Park Inn and pretended we weren’t students for a few hours. This place is crazy cool. I mean, F. Scott Fitzgerald stayed there for two years writing novels, and Barack Obama has paid a visit. Need I say more? We sat and drank cocktails on the sunset terrace whilst a jazz pianist twinkled away in the background. It was dreamy. A top way to end a top day.

Anywho, that’s the post for today, and the first of many! I’m now off to find a coat for a trip to Boston after the one I ordered looked less ‘over-sized’ and more ‘Hi, I’m Shamu’.

Peace + love & watch this space.
